STRONG POINTS OF THE PROJECT

INTEGRATED VALORIZATION STRATEGY OF THE TERRITORY, of the cultural heritage and of the Citizen, who must play a central role in the action.
As MIBACT suggests us:
"Cultural identities have taken on new values and specificities also thanks to the implications of an intangible nature, such as those linked to traditions, knowledge and creativity, which have enriched the notion of heritage."
In essence, they conclude that if the process of "conservation" and enhancement of the territory is supported by system strategies and therefore addressed to other resources that characterize and represent the distinctive signs that history has sedimented in a territory, and not only to cultural heritage , can play an important function of preservation, promotion and support in economic development and in the local community.
The involvement of the Community in fact raises awareness of cultural heritage, understood as the ability to recognize oneself in the identity of that heritage, to recognize it as one's own and therefore to collaborate and cooperate for its conservation, and thus develop a sense of RESPECT for that place.

URBAN REDEVELOPMENT of a meeting area.

A type of revaluation that aims at the meticulous and creative recovery of the doors of the fishermen's kiosks, currently in a state of decay. This is a place, however marginal to the Viareggio activities, but not to the port ones, which however has a visual potential that should not be underestimated.
Redeveloping an area, or regenerating it, is not only a way to restart the energies of a place that retains potential and vitality, but is a new and comprehensive approach that aims to improve the quality of citizens' existence, starting from what it occupies the soil and can revive it and increase its VALUE.
The port and its market are the "portal" of entry into the belly of Viareggio, it could be the business card for a new image.

VALORISATION OF THE TERRITORY which is directly proportional to the tourism promotion. Promoting territorial identity through modern and unusual methods, actions and solutions is the idea of the project which aims to restore cleanliness and aesthetic attention to the port. The creation of a vertical pictorial carpet on the doors is an image that can be used for the city as a POSTCARD, and a new portrait for visiting and non-visiting tourists.
To all intents and purposes a NEW image promotion.

BACKGROUND OF THE MURAGLIONE AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE PORT OF VIAREGGIO

THE FORANEA DIGA OF VIAREGGIO

The literal meaning of the "breakwater" dam is that of an artificial protection that is precisely outside (outside) the port, delimiting its mouth. It is a construction that is necessary especially in the cases of the so-called you bring a channel, that is, where there is no natural inlet, but simply a channel that flows into the sea, as in Viareggio, making it necessary to create artificial docks. Viareggio, despite various projects drawn up in the 1700s, remained without a real dock until the arrival of Maria Luisa of Bourbon, who in 1819 commissioned the construction of the Lucca dock, completed in 1823. This work, together with other measures taken by the Duchess, such as the elevation of Viareggio to the City, the Regulatory Plan and the Regulation of the Port of Viareggio of 1821, stimulated the growth of Viareggio and its navy, until then very modest. In particular, the provision of "stop fishing" during the hatching period of the fish, meant that the Viareggini preferred the transport activity to fishing, so much so that this was then left to people who came from outside, such as the "trabaccolari" of San Benedetto del Tronto. The shipbuilding activity underwent enormous development, such as to make it necessary in 1834 by Carlo Ludovico di Borbone, who succeeded his mother Maria Luisa, to issue a new regulation for the Port of Viareggio. Even the passage of the Duchy of Lucca, and therefore of Viareggio, to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany did not slow down the development of the Viareggio navy, which with the Unification of Italy had already become one of the most prosperous of the new state, so much so that in the years between 1871 and 1873 a new dock was built, that is Tuscany. The development of the Port of Viareggio, due to the aforementioned conformation, could only be always towards the open sea. The extension of the "pier brush" therefore required the construction of a breakwater, which contained and protected the docks, which were gradually built. So in 1905 -1908 there was the Darsena Italia (in 1913 the laying of the first stone of the port of Viareggio remained without practical follow-up for the outbreak of the First World War) and in 1938 the completion of the Darsena Impero, later called Europe. In the post-war period, the reconstruction of the Port of Viareggio with its docks, heavily destroyed by Allied bombing, only led to the extension of the Pier in the 1970s and the creation of a new large dock, called Viareggio and the famous "Triangolino", ie a extensive sandy area torn from the sea. This current conformation of the port of Viareggio, pending further budgeted interventions, has imposed an increasingly imposing breakwater, capable of protecting with the Muraglione "the docks from the winds especially from the libeccio, on which the new Viareggio lighthouse was placed with signs for the port entrance.
The port welcomes tourist boats, but not only: it is the safe harbor for fishing boats, which set sail and return every night, faithful to the maritime spirit that has been guiding them for years.
Tradition blends with the innovation and culture that this area carries with it, as that of the fisherman is one of the oldest crafts that survived to this day.
We wanted to reflect on the figure of the old fisherman, on the great sacrifice that the sea requires, and on the profound and primordial relationship between man and sea.
The sea ... this mysterious and abysmal element.
Fishermen demonstrate their respect for the sea, loving it and treating it as a bearer of life and human and cultural values.
The completion of the new fish market will bring new inspiration to the surrounding environment, and attention to new issues, related to the work of maritime activities in reference to the economy, the work of fishermen, the management of marine resources, and greater environmental and coastal territory protection.
So we decided to pay homage to these tireless maritime workers.
The desire to make Viareggio a better place is what prompted us to give birth to the idea of a competition for the creation of themed decorations on the doors of the fishermen's kiosks, behind the landing docks of the fishing boats, adjacent to the new market Fish, which will be open to all independent and professional artists, to secondary schools of second degree and to the academies of fine arts in the area.

The competition is open to all artists, of all nationalities, starting from 16 years of age (the participation of underage artists is subject to the authorization of those who exercise their fatherland).

In particular, the competition is aimed at:
- Artistic high schools and academies of fine arts of the national and international territory.
- Independent artists of any nationality and level.

Fundamental selection criteria will be quality, research, originality and contemporaneity, creativity of the work and consistency with the proposed theme. There will be no limitations of technique or style, as long as it is a painting as faithful as possible to the result of the realization on the sheet metal door. By pictorial work we mean any use or manual intervention in oil, tempera, acrylic, industrial paint, ink, engraving, graphite, watercolor, vinyl, on any type of substrate, even pre-printed, provided that it is kept in mind that the work must be reproduced faithfully with an enamel brush on a corrugated metal support (on the website the photographic material of the supports to be decorated). The size of each work must be 50 x 60 cm in horizontal orientation, under penalty of exclusion from the competition.

There is a participation fee for the competition, indicated in detail in the announcement.

RELIEF OF THE GATES

The gates have a square size of 250 x 250 cm. Most of the surface will be decorated, for a total of 250 x 220 cm (base x height), and a band will be left in the lower part of the door, where the artist's name and surname and title of the work will be inserted.
The number of the decorated warehouse will be indicated in the upper right corner.
The doors will be "delivered" already treated with a gray base enamel primer, and ready to be painted.
